The “Everything Connected” theme is more relevant and more powerful than ever. The Internet of Things (IoT) and Cloud business models have become a powerful force for business transformations. All industries and corporate decision makers are right now asking what IoT can do for me - or to me? What exactly does it mean? How are all going to be impacted by this disruptive force since it will be felt across all industries and all areas of society? Let’s start this conversation! I invite you to provide your feedback on this article as well as future postings about IoT, cloud, big data analytics and its impact on video and security from an observer’s lens.
It has become more evident that any industry including the security industry should pay attention to IoT and cloud business models because they have the potential to be the biggest industry transformations since the invention of the Internet. All major tech companies are chiming in together with venture capital backed startups to invest in this phenomenon. It will happen to you as well. With or without you.
Reinvent your business with IoT before someone else does
Now it’s time to reinvent and transform. Think about how you can disrupt your company before someone else does i.e. innovator's dilemma. Start-ups or corporate innovation outposts from Silicon Valley and other innovation industry clusters in the world are already shaping a new IoT cloud business idea or coding a solution to change the game in any industry. Just as an example; who would think the taxi industry or hospitality sector would be disrupted from social media and sharing economy platforms like Uber and Airbnb? Or the biggest automotive inventor would be Tesla; a car manufacturer from Silicon Valley? Who’s next?
In the near future I will be on my way in one of these self-driving electric vehicles, and at the same time watching the morning news on the build-in iPad Pro connected via mobile 5G, and don’t have to be concerned about getting involved in an accident
By connecting “things” such as cars, buildings, and industrial equipment in the real world, IoT promises to revolutionize how we live and work. From wearable devices to smart cities. I get reminded every morning driving to work and pass one of the Google self-driving cars thinking how it’s going to be when in the near future I will be on my way in one of these electric vehicles, and at the same time watching the morning news on the build-in iPad Pro connected via mobile 5G, and don’t have to be concerned about getting involved in an accident. Pretty cool and safe.
Not everybody is ready to react just yet though. Internet of Things is of course very hyped in the IT industry right now, but there is still a distinct gap between the IoT Hype Perception from Gartner and real business reality. In a recent survey, more than 70% of IT professionals believe the IoT wave will impact both consumers as well as the workplace, and that IoT is critical for their competitive advantage -but only 30% of the same companies were actively doing something about it in their business focus or investments. The time is now. The opportunity for major corporations is to seize the moment to go big and agile with game changing corporate innovation with full force on dedicated innovation teams, or join or invest in one of the disruptive startups!
The opportunity to improve your business or secure your community
The IoT term refers to machine-to-machine (M2M) technology enabled by secure network connectivity and cloud infrastructure - to reliably process data into useful information for people, businesses, and institutions. For them to ultimately improve efficiency of operations or secure communities.
The real value in IoT comes from integrating multiple devices into intelligent systems. Everything connected. Here we have to realize that it’s the data aggregation and dashboard presentation leading to actions that is where IoT makes a difference. When decision-makers or home owners have a holistic view of everything from energy use, people and traffic flows to crime and air pollution, they can make better policy decisions.
While IoT is widely hailed as the next big thing, the key ingredients — network connectivity, cloud, security, and infrastructure — have existed for decades. That’s why there are already more than 12 billion connected devices and machines in use today. But the IoT is driving the next generation of control networks for buildings and cities, and more than 30 billion connected things is expected to be in use by 2020 according to Gartner.
Expect a dramatic improvement of productivity, asset utilization and security from local homes to major city surveillance optimized by IoT cloud integration. Low cost sensors and processors on a unified platform are going to be the tipping point for global connection of Internet of Things.
Let's start with a 30 min. conversation.
